A Brief History

The Ghana Oil Palm Development Corporation was initiated by the Government of Ghana in 1975, with the objective of diversifying agricultural production through the introduction of oil palm cultivation in an economy dominated by the production of cocoa and tropical wood.

In 1995, GOPDC was privatized and sa Siat nv of Belgium acquired 80% of the company through Siat (Ghana) Ltd, a joint venture company with Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and African Tiger Mutual Fund Ltd Ghana (ATMF). From then on GOPDC expanded rapidly the area under cultivation, the installed processing capacity, as well as all related infrastructure.

Siat (Ghana) Ltd., majority shareholder of GOPDC Ltd., is a joint venture between sa Siat nv (51%), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (30%) and the African Tiger Mutual Fund (Ghana) Ltd. (19%).

nv Siat sa is a Belgian agro-industrial group of companies specialised in the establishment and management of industrial as well as smallholders' plantations and allied processing and downstream industries. The main focus rests on the cultivation of oil palms and rubber, and cattle ranching.
